about the festival

The Indian Film Festival Stuttgart is Europe’s largest Indian film festival. Since 2004 it has been held annually on five days in July by the Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg.

Since 2011, the festival is no longer called “Bollywood and Beyond”, but Indian Film Festival Stuttgart. The name change makes it clear that the festival program does not primarily show the mainstream Hindi film productions known as “Bollywood”, but rather current film productions from all regions of the subcontinent.

The Indian Film Festival Stuttgart reflects the growing internationalization of Indian film as well as the interest in Indian culture in Germany. Since 2004, the Indian Film Festival has presented around 800 films to an interested audience and showed how Indian society is changing in the area of tension between tradition and modernity. A change that is not without conflict and thus offers material for countless other film stories.

Town Twinning

More than ever, the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart is a sign of the intensive relationships between India and Germany, which are invigorated by a wide range of cooperation and partnerships.

This includes the city partnership between Stuttgart and Mumbai, which has existed since 1968 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018.
