„1947: BREXIT INDIA“

Director: Sanjivan Lal

India / USA / 2023 / English / 111 mins / International Premiere

This documentary explores how the British ruled India for 200 years, even though their population never exceeded 0.05 per cent of India’s total population. This made them a world power.

Shortly after the Second World War, Lord Mountbatten was sent to India in 1947 with the task of handing over power to the Indians by 30 June 1948. Yet he decided on the spot to split the country into two parts within just six weeks and transferred power within six months of his arrival.

This led to the deaths of one million people and the displacement of a further 20 million.

Experts from the UK, the West Indies, Pakistan and India discuss the influence of the United States and Canada on the decolonisation of the UK and the path to Indian independence.
