SCREENING:
The State of Baden-Württemberg and the Stuttgart region in particular, is home to a creative and diverse film industry. In December, we organise an annual showcase of the best films by local filmmakers. With this special screening, we want to share some of the highlights from the December 2023 festival programme.

In a 19th-century Western town, a saloon serves as the backdrop for a gripping tale. Cleveland, the feared enforcer of the town, faces a dilemma: an unknown assailant has been systematically eliminating individuals, each with a score to settle with Cleveland himself. Seeking answers, he enters the saloon, determined to extract information from its owner, who seems privy to the town’s gossip and holds more knowledge than she’s willing to admit. When she plays a deceptive game, Cleveland confronts her with a stark ultimatum: either she reveals the truth now or faces eternal silence. However, just as tension reaches its peak, the mysterious assailant, the Phantom, makes a dramatic entrance.

A ballet dancer is unable to continue dancing due to recurring injuries and is inevitably faced with the decision: stop or continue with pain? When Melvin is kicked out by his father on his 21st birthday, he struggles with his inner demons and toys with the idea of ending his life. But right on the edge of a cliff he finds the ‘Last Bar’, a quirky place filled with misfits who all came there for the same reasons. Fuelled by conversations and confrontations, his inner journey continues and he is forced to stand up for himself. By sunrise, his gloomy thoughts have disappeared and he decides to stay a little longer.

Things are not going well for depressed bed salesman Uwe. He has money worries, the furniture store has fired him and, of all things, he has no place to sleep at Christmas. When he tries to spend the night in the bed department, he is caught by the ageing security guard Bernd. Uwe disappears and discovers that Bernd also has a secret. In the nocturnal anonymity of the furniture store, he sells identities and today, of all days, he has a dangerous customer. The unlikely pair must now work together instead of fighting each other. Only if they manage to overcome their toxic egos will they have a chance of emerging from this night as allies.

When student Emilia has to clear out her old nursery, she finds unopened letters from her long absent father in the boxes. Emilia wants to throw the letters away so as not to open up her emotional wound. Then suddenly her old cuddly toy, Stampfi the elephant, wakes up and speaks to her. Stampfi, a gift from her father, tries to persuade Emilia to read all the letters. Emilia realises that she can’t hide from her demons in the blanket cave like she did as a child. Stampfi’s confidence gives her hope. A story about repressed fears, forgiveness and growing up.
