Bereits als kränkliches Kind fand er seine Freiheit im Tanzen und Singen, mit 16 Jahren erklärte er, homosexuell zu sein – sehr zum Zorn seiner Mutter, die ihn aus dem Haus warf. 1932, im Alter von 24 Jahren, fuhr er mit seinem 20-jährigen Freund Raymond Burnier in einem Ford-Coupé mit Anhänger nach Benares, ins Herz der hinduistischen Welt. Dort blieb die beiden fast 20 Jahre lang und durchdrangen die wimmelnde Welt des Shiva-Hinduismus.
It has been many years since Alain Daniélou left – and yet he is still so present that his steps could be retraced: Benares, Venice, Zagarolo… Throughout his life, he was a free spirit. Even as a sickly child, he found his freedom in dancing and singing, and at the age of 16 he declared that he was homosexual – much to the anger of his mother, who threw him out of the house. In 1932, at the age of 24, he travelled with his 20-year-old friend Raymond Burnier in a Ford coupé with a trailer to Benares, the heart of the Hindu world. The two stayed there for almost 20 years, penetrating the teeming world of Shiva Hinduism.
