Based on the autobiography of Sonia S, this is a coming-of-age story of a 12-year-old girl Sonia who suffers from a pigmentation disorder. Sonia comes from a poor family from a small village near Bengaluru, the capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Her alcoholic father almost disdains her for what she is, and her mother is helpless although well intentioned. At the cusp of high school, Sonia is introduced to a new school in the city with new classmates who are not only discriminatory because of her new looks but even hostile. With only apathy coming from her class teacher Ashwini, Sonia is pushed to the brink. This story explores her transformation from a shy, self-pitying, hopeless teenager to a mature young woman who learns to live in peace with herself and her surroundings.
